How This Currency Calculator Works
Enter the amount you're converting, the exchange rate between the two currencies, and any fees your bank, card, or exchange service charges. Because exchange rates move constantly and this page doesn't pull live market data, you supply the rate yourself — check your bank, card network, or a currency data provider for the current mid-market rate before converting. The calculator then applies a percentage markup (common with banks and some money-transfer services) and/or a flat fee (common with wire transfers) to show what you'd actually receive versus the theoretical mid-market amount.
Why Your Bank's Rate Isn't the "Real" Rate
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between what currency traders buy and sell at — it's the rate you see quoted in the news. Banks and card issuers almost always add a markup on top of it, often 1-4%, even when they advertise "no fees." A 3% hidden markup on a $2,000 transfer quietly costs $60 more than the mid-market rate would suggest, which is why comparing the effective exchange rate shown here across providers is more useful than comparing advertised fees alone.
Traveling or Investing Abroad?
If you're budgeting for a trip or a large purchase overseas, run the converted amount through the budget calculator to see how it fits your spending plan. If you're comparing returns on a foreign investment, the ROI calculator can help you evaluate the result once it's converted back to your home currency.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find the exchange rate to enter?
Search for the current mid-market rate between your two currencies (for example, "USD to EUR exchange rate") from a bank, card network, or financial data site, and enter it in the Exchange Rate field. This calculator doesn't pull live rates automatically, so the accuracy of your result depends on how current the rate you enter is.
Why is the amount I receive less than the mid-market value?
Banks, card networks, and money-transfer services typically add a percentage markup on top of the mid-market rate and may also charge a flat transfer fee. Entering those in the Conversion Fee and Flat Fee fields shows you the effective rate you're actually getting, which is often meaningfully worse than the advertised or mid-market rate.
